Our aim is for people to not only see Soles4Souls’ work in action but to involve themselves in it firsthand. We create lifelong ambassadors of change through our shoe distribution and micro-business efforts.

Why the need for shoes? Well approximately 300,000 million children around the globe are without adequate footwear. There are 740,000,000 people affected by hookworm which can cause intestinal pain, weakness, and cognitive impairment and 4,000,000 have podoconiosis, a debilitating and disfiguring soil-based disease. So by distributing shoes, not only are you making it possible for children to go to school, or adults to go to work, you are also helping end the epidemic of diseases that enter people’s feet around the world simply because they do not have a pair of shoes.

Each country we travel to is a different heartwarming experience in itself. We lead teams to Haiti, Honduras, Costa Rica, Jamaica, and Tanzania and are currently looking into adding more locations. We would be thrilled to add a trip date or even a new country if the current trip schedule does not fit yours. Let us know what you have in mind, and we can reach into our networks around the world to create a custom trip for you and your friends. Our trips are anywhere from a 5 to a 10 day experience where not only do you get to distribute shoes to a mix of schools, orphanages, churches, and communities, but you spend your days playing with the children and learning about the culture of the country. Trips include activities such as tours through capital cities and museums, visits to the market, and adventurous activities like zip lining through the canopies of Costa Rica and chimpanzee trekking in Tanzania.

These trips are set up for individuals to travel but if you are traveling with a school, work, or church group and are interested in incorporating programming specific to your studies, field, or ministry, we will work with you to design a trip that is tailored to your interests.

Do you want to work with children in Cameroon?

The Cameroon Association for the Protection and Education of the Child (CAPEC) is a non- governmental organization with Reg. No: G39/014/5/252 work in Cameroon. Since its inception in 2002, the organization has been working with children/youths, parents, Government bodies and intergovernmental bodies in the promotion of community’s welfare. It works to identify the need of the child especially the rural child/youths, the underprivileged and the weaker section of the society through participatory approach.

Duties of Volunteer

1. Teaching Position:

Volunteers and volunteer-interns assist in teaching English language, mathematics, geography, history, cookery, human rights etc. A local teacher in the school will guide volunteers and interns in their work. They will shadow the
volunteer to become familiar with the school, the children, and the teaching curriculum during the first week of classes. If the volunteer or intern is ready at the beginning of the second week, he or she may begin teaching independently or still work hand in hand with the local teacher. Apart from teaching, some other task related to teaching includes, assign and grade class and homework, read books to the entire classes or small groups, confer with parents or guardians, teacher, counselor, and administration in order to resolve pupil’s behavioral and academic problems.
Volunteers shall also perform administrative duties such as assisting in the office, attending to parents, given materials to teacher taking from the store, help in typing school exams for printing and also enable the junior class to respond to their pen pal letters. Volunteers staying from 2 months and above are advice to come with their laptops and digital cameras.

2. Computer Program in School:

Introduction
Unless we increase access to computers, the technology gap between Africa and developed countries will continue to widen. The internet and other technologies have made the world an increasingly global community, facilitating the exchange of ideas, information, and skills across geographic distances.
Volunteers will teach basic computer skills to senior pupils in small classes of 4 to 10 students. The curriculum includes topics like creating and organizing files, sending/receiving email, using the Internet, and more.
We will provide volunteers with technical support, resources and materials, and training as needed.

Skills Needed

• Familiarity with Microsoft Office and computers

• Patience teaching beginners and staff

• Available for communication via email

3. Environmental Education / Tree Planting/Gardening:

Volunteers will identify, develop and carry out practical hands-on Projects in our school environmental clubs. The project is aimed at achieving transformative education for sustainable development. School garden supervision and tree planting exercises are some of the activities associated in this program.
The position is truly challenging and need someone flexible, creative, open minded, has a can-do attitude, and ready to take initiative.

4. Sports/Games/Creation:

Community Sports projects are a great tool for helping the development of children from disadvantaged areas and especially school children for easy assimilation. As sport is part of our curriculum and has to be done from class 2 to class 6, volunteer will come up with different programs for all classes.
Additionally, volunteers can organize and lead activities designed to promote physical, mental and social development, such as games, arts and crafts, music, and storytelling.

5. Organic Agriculture:

Our school has a piece of land where the children plant their vegetable to be self-sustained and also to create revenue which support us to buy education materials such as pen, pencils and chalk for the school. The school for the next academic year intend to start with a poultry farm. By taking part in this project, volunteers can also learn the local culture, languages, mediation and organic farming work.

6. Teach Music to children at School:

This program is designed more to help out with the children and youngsters when it comes to their early preparation and basic musical studies in order to fulfil the exigencies and expectations in the growing market of music.
As an NGO school, our tiny budget cannot afford lots of teachers for the kids and the youngster’s activities. It’s really important to introduce both groups to the joy of music in a unique way as they need to be ready soon to take the next step in their concert-going experience.
All the staff at the school strive to build a pleasant environment for teamwork. With volunteers, they envision focusing on the process involved in rehearsing and communicating so students will acknowledge that any musical product is ruled by the accomplishment of their interaction.
The main goal of this project is to coach children and youngster with ethics, creativity, cultural keys, individuality and a good knowledge of the main musical values for a successful career work.

7. Summer Program:

-Hello Kids Projects, brings close to 120 kids together to teach them various skills

-Holiday /classes for kids

-Community outreach

The Concerned Children In Difficult Circumstances, Inc. (CCDC) is a voluntary, non-for-profit, non-governmental and non-denominational organization,

established in February 1993 to cater to the physical, social and emotional needs of wayward, Abandoned, Orphaned and Traumatized children occasioned by the Liberian civil war.

WHAT PROMPTED THE CCDC
In December of 1989 Liberians woke up to the stark realities of a senseless civil strife with a death toll of over half a million people and a million plus languishing in refugees camps in neighbouring countries while many more were made homeless in their own homeland, Liberians were experiencing one of the worst situations in human history and their hopes remain shattered until the coming in of the international community to separate the warren parties and the subsequent holding of an election in 2005 that brought some level of stability and sanity to the country.

A further consequence of the war is the total breakdown of the structure of the Liberian society. This structural disintegration can readily be seen and felt in the basic unit of the society – the FAMILY. We see springing up in place of the “old” society a “new” one plagued with numerous social ills, some of which are at their highest peak: Drug/alcohol abuse, teen age pregnancy, waywardness, war trauma, delinquency, and crime are on the increase. Still worse is the plight of the youth and children who are the most vulnerable. This makes the situation very serious since it has the potential to shatter the very fabric of our society and jeopardize the future.

It then behoves all concerned Liberians to take the appropriate steps if the situation must be reversed. The Concerned Children In Difficult Circumstances, Inc. (CCDC), therefore, is a response to this urge to save our children today and hence, our nation tomorrow.

ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE

CCDC, INC. has a 7 men Board of Directors and a Management team of 26 staffs for all three programs. CCDC is not a membership organization. Any person, Group or Organization committed to the promotion and improvement of Children lives shall participate, affiliate and/ or associate with CCDC, INC.

WHAT ARE THE GOALS/OBJECTIVES OF CCDC

The vision of CCDC is two-fold;

1. Providing the environment/opportunities for children in difficult circumstances (wayward, abandoned, orphaned and traumatized) to grow healthily out of the conflict.
2. Making them useful and productive youths to meet the challenges of post-war Liberia.

To achieve the above, the following shall constitute the objectives of CCDC.

· To identify, take in and care for wayward, abandoned, orphaned and traumatized children between the ages of 0 to 17 years.

· To provide physical comfort for these children, i.e. food, clothing, safe drinking water, rest, recreations, good and safe environment.

· To provide for them counselling and medical care for emotional as well as other physical problems.

· To provide vocational training and educational opportunities for them.

· To provide moral and religious instructions for the proper upbringing of children.

· To foster the enhancement of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the child adopted November 20, 1989.

· To help educate parents, guardians, orphanages and the community on the Rights of the Child.

· To help trace and identify parents/relatives of wayward/abandoned children’s and explore possibilities for reunion.

· To engage in other activities aimed at achieving the goals of CCDC.

· To collaborate and liaise with relevant government agencies, churches and such other NGO’s in the attainment of these objectives.
CCDC, INC MAIN FOCUS

CCDC strive to improve the lives of Children affected by conflict and those living in extreme difficult circumstances (especially Orphans, abandoned, wayward and drugs/alcohol abuse teenagers and other extreme vulnerable children) by closely working with them through community based rehabilitation programs. The organization currently runs three programs as shown below:
ORPHANAGE

The Orphanage is presently catering to 45 orphans and informal education. They are also provided life skills training.

AGRICULTURE AND LIVILHOOD

Agriculture program deals with animal husbandry vegetable production, the income generated from its sales are used to sustain the Orphanage and the Community School.

COMMUNITY BASED REHIBILITATION PROGRAM

The Community Based Rehabilitation program has two components (CBR and the School):

· The CBR caters to 235 disabled children with in the Gardnersville community; the centres provide food and non-food items and psychosocial support to the children through community outreach workers.

· The School has an enrolment of over 265 students at present and runs both Kindergarten & Elementary sections that cater to the orphans and community children.

FINANCING THE PROGRAM

The initial funds to organize and secure a building, and get the program off the ground were provided by the founder and six other members of the Board of Directors of CCDC.
Considering the nature of the task and its associated challenges, it is expected that friends of Liberia, Christian and other philanthropists, promoters of Youth/Children programs, the religious community and the other goodwill people/organizations will identify with this case and render the much needed support and funds to facilitate the smooth running of the Centre.

PROPOSAL FOR CONSTRUCTION OF A 4-CLASS ROOM SHELTER FOR VULNERABLE CHILDREN:

1.1 PROJECT BACK-GROUND

Hamurwa Needy Children Project (HNCP) was established in 2009 in Hamurwa Town Council kabale district.

HNCP has focused attention on the problems of orphaned and other vulnerable children (OVC) through a number of policies regulations and initiatives aimed at helping OVC and the surrounding community.

The project has put in place a Poultry project ,Nursery and Primary School education up to Primary 2 class so far made of timbers But hopes to go on with upper classes, the establishment of such educational facility was demanded driven by the community members .the community having realized that such children have been orphaned ,children who have been living on streets and children and children exposed to situations of armed conflict ; mandated the establishment of the project to the established specifically for these OVCs

HNCP with its strategic objectives was conceived to save the roaming numbers of homeless neglected/children, orphaned and street children from further vulnerability.

Children who are vulnerable to street life include those who have been abandoned by their families or sent into cities and towns because of families’ intense poverty, often with hope that a child will be able to earn money for the family and send it home.

Children who run away from home or children’s institutions frequently end up on the streets since they rarely return home due to dysfunctional families, or physical, mental, and sexual abuse.

HNCP through intensive research has realized that in several areas, refugee children of armed conflict are separated from their families for long period of time and AIDS orphans repeatedly find no where to go but the street.

It is very unfortunate to note that homelessness and street life have extremely detrimental effects on the children.

Their un stable life style, lack of medical care and inadequate living conditions increase young peoples susceptibility to chronic illnesses such as respiratory or ear infections, gastrointestinal disorders and AIDS. Children fending for them selves must find ways to eat some scavenge or find exploitative work. Many are enticed by adults and older youth into selling drugs, stealing and prostitution.

Such children lack security, protection and hope.

They continue to face a deep rooted negative stigma about homelessness, orphanage, and abandonment and more than anything else, they lack love.

HNCP since its inception advocates for protecting children, Many Governments, non governmental organizations, and members of civil society around the world increased their attention on vulnerable children as the number of this disenfranchised population continues to grow dramatically. None the less, more action is necessary. Most importantly, as a result of adverse economic conditions in many societies, a plan to provide basic education and housing needs to be developed. On a local and regional level, initiatives are being taken to assist these vulnerable and needy children. Often through shelters, many of them have programs designed to provide safety, health care, counseling, education, legal aid and other social services.

Some shelters are also needed to provide regular individual contact, offering much-needed love and care.

Like HNCP, many NGOs have been formed world wide with missions to provide the plight of vulnerable children and youth. For example Casa Alianza in Mexico and Central America, Hope for Children UK working with local groups world wide, Butterflies in New Delhi, India, and Street Kids international, a Canadian based Organization, all focus specifically on street children.

They have set up numerous shelters providing basic security, food, education, and clothing for more than 50,000 homeless children in greater Delhi.

Similarly HNCP intends to construct a four classroom shelters for the needy children

1.2 TARGET BENEFICIARIES.

HNCP targets to save and protect children who are orphaned, homeless, abandoned, neglected and other vulnerable ones aged below 18 years in Uganda.

HNCP started with 15 beneficiaries, and currently supporting 120 at its school project (Greenfield Nursery and Primary School) and 90 children in a government school .it is targeting over 500 beneficiaries by the end of the year 2015.

1.3 LEGAL AND POLICY FRAME WORK OF THE PROJECT.

HNCP has since inception constructed temporary structures from where it is currently operating. It intends to advocate for the rights of children.

Article 27 of the convention on the rights of the child (CRC) asserts that “state parties recognize he right to every child it a standard of living for the child’s physical, mental, spiritual, moral, and social development.

The project director and the carefully recruited qualified staff will uphold the basics of education as the transmission from one generation to the next.

The accumulated wisdom and knowledge is for the benefit of society and also to prepare the young people for their active participation in its maintenance and development.

1.4 PROBLEM STATEMENT.

There are an estimated over 500 vulnerable children in kabale district. Children orphaned and living on the streets are especially vulnerable to victimization, exploitation and the abuse of their civil and economic rights.

How ever, national and international indifference to the problem has led to continual neglect and abuse of these children.

The already gathered vulnerable children by HNCP are in extreme lack of educational shelters for which this Organization is soliciting possible support from volunteer donors.

1.5 PROJECT MISSION STATEMENT.

“To uplift and help children advocate for their rights and have accessibility to education for their sustainable development”

1.6 PROJECT MOTTO.

“Educate a child for a better future”

Community Volunteering in Tanzania

We deliberately don’t refer to our healthcare placements as medical or nursing volunteering to avoid confusing the aim of student learning with the kind of service that requires years of clinical training to provide in a hospital environment. However, a lot of students who join us also want to make a real contribution and help others while away – and that’s what our community volunteer placements are all about.
We have a range of volunteer opportunities in all of our destinations, most of which are based around care work with children. We work with orphanages, care homes and special schools, all of which operate with limited resources and really value an extra pair of hands.
You don’t need specialist skills to get involved, just time, energy and genuine motivation – but if you do have a particular talent for art, music, sport or anything else it can probably be put to good use!
Volunteer placements are very flexible; you can spend time helping out during free afternoons and evenings, or at weekends.

MEDICAL PLACEMENT IN TANZANIA

Tanzania is the perfect choice for a first experience of tropical medicine in Africa. Lacking the equipment and resources more developed countries enjoy, doctors and nurses here have adapted to deliver the best possible front-line healthcare in challenging conditions – making it a fantastic place for students to experience firsthand the sharp end of clinical medicine and surgery.

Colorful indigenous cultures still thrive here as they have done for centuries… Even our security guards at the Global Safaris houses are Masai warriors! The influence of tribal cultures and traditional medicine practices are also evident in cases you’ll see in the hospitals, adding even greater value to the learning experience.

Our twin bases in Iringa and Morogoro are both wonderfully friendly and safe towns, set among the rugged hills of the southern highlands. Iringa offers easy access to the stunning wildlife and untamed wilderness of Ruaha National Park, meaning you can finish work on Friday and be spotting elephant, lion and giraffe at a waterhole by sunset!

Arusha is perfectly placed for weekend trips to the paradise island of Zanzibar, world famous for its snorkeling, scuba diving and white sand beaches. The location of the house and hospital give you the best of both – a genuine experience of African community life off the tourist trail during the week, and dolphin spotting as your soak up the Indian Ocean sunshine at the weekend!

Our Tanzania programme can accommodate 123 students per week making it a great place to get to know other students interested in careers in healthcare from all over the globe.

Global Safaris provides opportunities to gain hospital work experience for students interested in medicine, nursing, midwifery and dentistry.

Our placements are ideal for Sixth Form students, as well as those taking a gap year or undergraduates of related university courses.

Pre- Medicin Work Experience in Tanzania

Want to know what being a doctor is really like? Our overseas medicine work experience placements are the perfect way to find out. Whether you are looking to gain valuable medicine work experience to put on your UCAS application or an in-depth insight into working in a hospital, there is no better way to learn more about medicine than shadowing clinical experts carrying out their day to day duties.

During your time on placement, you will be placed in a different department every week, according to your interests. Within this department, you will be assigned a doctor who will act as your mentor, explaining cases to you and answering any questions you might have.

The type of cases you will observe depends on which departments you are working in. You can choose from: General Surgery, Pediatrics, Orthopedics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Internal Medicine and many more. As well as spending time on the wards or in the operating theatre, you will also receive several clinical teaching sessions a week, after you have finished in the hospital for the day. These classes are a great way to understand more about healthcare in the region you are working in, and to pick up some clinical skills, such as sutchering or dressing wounds.

Our placements are perfect for a range of students, including those in year 12/13 looking to gain experience before applying to study medicine at university, gap year students, those studying for their undergraduate degree in a non-clinical subject (for example biomedical science) who hope to go on to medical school and students in their first year of a clinical degree course.

Students generally spend two weeks on a medical placement with us, although it is possible to join the programme for anything from one week upwards. Our programmes run all year round, so you can choose when you would like to go, and how long you would like to go for, 52 weeks of the year.

Working in a hospital overseas is a great experience, not only because of the close up clinical experience you will receive. It is also a great way to learn about healthcare in other countries and to observe the ethical dilemmas doctors face day to day in less well-funded hospitals in other parts of the globe. The cases you will observe will also differ from what you would generally see at home – Typhoid, Dengue Fever, Tuberculosis and Malaria are all a good contrast to what you might find in your local hospital!

A placement overseas is also a great way to turn two weeks of medical work experience into the adventure of a lifetime! From going on Safari in Tanzania, there are plenty of opportunities to make this experience truly unforgettable!

Pre- Nursing Work Experience in Tanzania

If you are interested in becoming a nurse, our pre-nursing programme is a great way to find out more about what the role involves, and to get an insight into which areas of nursing might be of most interest to you. An increasingly competitive field, it is important to have as much relevant work experience under your belt in order to help you secure a place on the training course of your choice.

Our overseas pre-nursing placements can be tailored to your interests:

Our pre-nursing students can choose to work in the following departments: General Medicine, Surgery, Emergency Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Internal Medicine and many more! Whilst getting a feel for what areas of nursing interest you the most, you will also have the opportunity to see cases that you may never have the chance to observe back home – tropical diseases such as Malaria, TB and Typhoid are all common in our hospitals overseas.

All hospitals in each country have a range of departments. Examples of the types of cases you might be working on include: the aftercare of neurosurgery patients in Czech Republic, the care and rehabilitation of stroke patients in Thailand, neonatal complications or Malaria patients in Tanzania.

Working in one of our partner hospitals overseas also allows you to get an insight into the difference between healthcares in other countries and your own. Facilities in some of our partner hospitals are very basic and nurses often have to make difficult decisions on which patient to tend to first, as they are often so short staffed.

Your pre-nursing placement starts here:

Students age 16 or over are welcome to join one of our programmes. Students at school or college who are currently thinking of enrolling for nursing at university, those on a Gap Year, undergraduate students in other disciplines who are hoping to get into postgraduate nursing or those in their first year of a nursing degree are all welcome to join this programme.

The average length of a placement with us is two weeks, although anything between one and four weeks is popular too, and some students choose to stay even longer! Our programmes run all year round, so you can decide when you would like to go, and how long for.

Generally, working hours in the hospitals are between 8am and 2pm. depending what department you are in, you could be spending time on the wards or in the operating theatre. You will be assigned a nurse who will act as your mentor whilst you are on placement. They will guide you through each case, advising you on any procedures that they are carrying out, and answering any questions that you have.

Several times a week, you will have clinical teaching sessions with one of the mentors, who will go through some of the cases you have observed in more detail, as well as teaching you some basic clinical techniques, such as how to take a patient’s blood pressure or how to dress wounds effectively. As well as learning lots which will help you in your future career, taking part in one of our overseas placements is a great way to see a new place and have unforgettable experiences! From going on safari at sunset in Tanzania to snorkeling on the south coast of Thailand, there is plenty of ways to make your trip unforgettable!

Pre-Dentistry Work Experience in Tanzania

Our pre-dentistry programme is a great way to get a real insight into dental care. With tough competition for university places, getting good work experience is more important than ever. Learning from highly qualified dentists in a clinical setting will really help your personal statement to stand out to admissions tutors. Spending time working closely alongside a dentist will also help you to decide if a career in dentistry is right for you.

Each of our overseas destinations provides a unique pre-dentistry experience:

Throughout our dental placements, our students will be working with experienced dentists who will explain each patient’s case in detail. Our mentors are also very happy to answer any questions that you may have. This is an observational placement (as our students have not yet obtained any clinical experience) but there may be some opportunities to help with hands on tasks, such as taking a mould of a patient’s mouth.

Dentistry in Tanzania is mainly restorative (as people do not go to the dentist routinely) therefore patients often require extractions, fillings and root canals. Thailand and Czech Republic also have an emphasis on cosmetic dentistry, such as teeth whitening or implants. All destinations see trauma cases.

Your dentistry experience starts here:

Working in a dental practice overseas will help you to gain a deeper understanding of the differences in healthcare around the world. In many of the countries we work with, there will be more cases of decay than in the UK. Many of the government practices we work with are also very underfunded and short staffed, which will provide an interesting contrast to dental facilities back home.

As well as getting some fantastic work experience in dentistry, taking part in one of our programmes is a great opportunity to explore an exciting new place. From going on safari in Tanzania to bamboo rafting in Thailand, each destination has plenty to ensure your spare time is unforgettable too!

Students who join our pre-dental programme are generally between 16-18 and in year 12 or 13 at school or college, looking to gain this experience before applying for dentistry at university. Gap year students, those studying an undergraduate degree and hoping to apply for dentistry as a postgraduate or those in their pre-clinical years of dentistry also join this programme.

Students can travel with us for anything between one and four weeks, or longer. The most popular length of time is two weeks. Our programmes run every week throughout the year, so it is possible to join whenever is most convenient.

  Pre-Midwifery Work Experience in Tanzania

Our pre-midwifery placements are a great chance to gain experience of working alongside midwives and other health professionals in a real life hospital environment. Students have the opportunity observe births and C-sections at close range.

Each of our destinations provides a unique pre-midwifery experience:

In Iringa Regional Hospital in Tanzania, students can observe between 10 and 15 births a day on average. Generally these are complex cases as women don’t come in to hospital for a straightforward birth. Thirty per cent of these deliveries are by C-section, which makes for a varied placement!

In Arusha in Tanzania, there is an entire branch of the hospital dedicated to maternity. This branch serves the whole island, so it is always busy and there are high numbers of births to observe everyday!

Students in Tanzania generally split their time between observing births (both natural and surgical) and antenatal care in obstetrics and gynecology and caring for newborn babies in the neonatal unit.

Czech Republic has very modern facilities including a state of the art 4D ultrasound, so it is a great place to observe antenatal procedures, as well as labour itself.

Your Midwifery Experience starts here:

You will be assigned a mentor within the department you are working in. They will guide you through your time in the hospital, explaining each case to you step by step, and answering any questions that you have.

Our programmes are suitable for many students; those in year 12/13 hoping to apply to study midwifery at university, gap year students and those looking to apply to postgraduate midwifery programmes.

This experience can really help your UCAS application to stand out from the crowd, and it is a great talking point at interview. It is also a good way of working out if a career in midwifery is really for you.

Our pre-midwifery programmes run every week throughout the year, so you can decide when you want to go. The most popular length of time to join one of our programmes is two weeks, but anything between one and four weeks (or more) is fine!

It was established in 1999 by civil engineer Mr. Kayemba Kalema, who was touched by the suffering children in his community. The foundation aims to reach marginalized children and youths such as orphans, school drop outs and members of very poor families. Today it brings together over 80 children from the outskirt villages of Kampala to provide them with the basics of life; education, shelter, food, clothing and health care.

Currently the foundation is run in cooperation with Kigoma Adventist Nursery and Primary School, which all Hope children attend. Its orphanage home is set up as a nurturing family environment. Local care takers and cooks are employed to help the children in their daily lives. Some of the church land is utilized for crop growing and gardening, thus making farming and preparing food an integral part of the students’ weekly program.

The foundation is led by Mr. Kalema, the executive director. He is assisted by a program coordinator and other staff members. International volunteers are an active part of the foundation, bringing in a good variety of knowledge and skills. Local and regional partnerships are sought in order to create effective networks with funding, volunteering organizations and similar schools.

All members of the foundation are expected to demonstrate certain core values while executing their responsibilities. They include:

- Upholding the fundamental rights and freedom of children

- Integrity; ensuring consistency in actions, principles and measures

- Accountability; accurate reporting on funds management

- Equity; fairness throughout all performed work

- Honesty; truthfulness in all planned and performed actions

Over the past decade the foundation has succeeded in helping over 250 children progress in their lives. Some of them continue their studies at a sister vocational school, learning to become electricians, hair dressers and tailors. However, a large number of children are still outside the reach of support and the Hope Children’s Foundation is in continuous need of funding in order to maintain and develop its operations.

Near future targets prioritize fulfilling the children’s basic needs. First comes ensuring that each child receives three nutritious meals a day, during term time and also during school holidays. Currently most of the children are sleeping on mattresses, making installing mosquito nets difficult. Acquiring double deck beds will help in keeping the children away from rats, insects and other harmful animals. The beds will be built by a local carpenter, assisted by the students so that they are able to learn carpentry skills. Water for cooking, washing and other needs is carried uphill from a well – one trip takes over half an hour. Building a water tank near the school and dormitories will ensure easy access to clean water and significantly ease daily tasks. A ground hole has already been dug for this tank.

regards,

Help rescue children from child labour in Ghana

The AnidasoNsae Foundation (TANF)

In Twi, one of the many native languages spoken in Ghana, “AnidasoNsae” means “Hope has not Ended” and this is our motto!

Although Ghana is now a fast developing country, it still faces many problems especially in the areas of Child Labour, Education and Health Care. Many children are unable to attend school due to financial problems and have to work instead. TANF hopes to tackle all three of these problems!

TANF was founded in 2012 by Rev. Laud K Akuffo in Ghana, as he recognised the need to help children and their families that are exposed to the dangers and disadvantages of child labour. Now we hope to improve the lives of these children stuck in the cycle of poverty. Our aim for the year of 2013 is to rescue 50 children from child labour.

Child labour refers to any work that subjects a child (aged 0-17) to economic exploitation. It is often hazardous, or interferes with the child’s education, or is harmful to the child’s health, as well as, physical, mental, spiritual, moral and social development. The children TANF work with are mainly involved with working in stone quarries. Poverty is the main cause of child labour. Unfortunately poor parents send their children to work, not out of choice, but for economic reasons. The parents are unable to afford to send their children to school, owing to expensive school fees and the costs of uniform and textbooks. In addition, children in work are an additional source of income for a family.

TANF’s goal is to take these children out of their current circumstances by providing their families with the financial means to send their children to school. We are also hoping to provide the neediest children with free Health Care, as we understand that the key to a brighter future is an education and good health. We hope to achieve this goal with your help through child sponsorships. The cost of sponsoring a child for a month is 66 Ghana Cedi’s ($35, £22, €26). This will cover the costs of your sponsored child’s school fees, extra class fees, lunch, uniform, Health care, all school equipment and textbooks. Furthermore, you will be able to get into contact with your sponsor child by post.

We also accept volunteers. Volunteers can help TANF in many different areas. If you are interested in supporting our child labour project, you will be able to help us identify the children that are most in need of our child sponsorships programme and how we can pull them out of child labour and bring them into education. Each case is different, and each child is forced to work for different reasons. First, the factors pushing the child into child labour must be resolved before we can help them attain a successful future. Often this also means involving the entire family and wider community and educating them about the advantages of a school education and what benefits this can bring to them and their children.

If you are interested in volunteering in the Education sector you could work as a teacher at one of our partner schools.Furthermore, volunteers are also accepted into the Health Sector, where they can work in local hospitals and health centres and help us provide the children that are in most need with free health care.
